use the PDI planning guide and principles of backward design to scaffold your planning in a recursive and flexible set of practices
intentionally design opportunities for core PDI practices
incorporate digital practices that deepen understanding and foster engagement

Key Ideas

In this chapter, we walk you through a flexible planning process, one step at a time, using a PDI planning guide, thinking prompts, and many grade specific examples to help you recognize important ideas toward integrating PDI into your teaching.

The three main sections of the planning guide are aligned with the three parts of the PDI planning process shown above: (1) set expectations for teaching and learning, (2) plan authentic opportunities for PDI, and (3) make purposeful choices about digital texts and tools.

At the core are three guiding questions:

• How do I teach with intent?

• How do my students grow to learn with intent?

• How do I cultivate inquiry in my classroom?
