Constitutionally barred from running for reelection, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador sought to show last month, in a very public way, that presidential candidate Claudia Sheinbaum has his blessing. So he handed his hoped-for successor an actual baton, in a ceremony outside a Mexico City restaurant not far from the National Palace – the seat of the country’s executive power.
Sheinbaum, a 61-year-old former Mexico City mayor and longtime political ally of Lopez Obrador, hit all the right notes in thanking him. Accepting the baton along with the leftist Morena party’s presidential nomination, Sheinbaum said she would assume “the full responsibility of continuing the course marked by our people, that of the transformation initiated by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.”

El presidente mexicano, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, que tiene prohibido constitucionalmente presentarse a la reelección, quiso demostrar el mes pasado, de forma muy pública, que la candidata presidencial Claudia Sheinbaum cuenta con su bendición. Así que entregó a su esperada sucesora un bastón de mando real, en una ceremonia a las afueras de un restaurante de Ciudad de México, no lejos del Palacio Nacional, sede del poder ejecutivo del país.
Sheinbaum, ex alcaldesa de Ciudad de México de 61 años y aliada política de López Obrador desde hace mucho tiempo, le dio las gracias por todo. Al aceptar el bastón de mando junto con la candidatura presidencial del partido izquierdista Morena, Sheinbaum dijo que asumiría "toda la responsabilidad de continuar el rumbo marcado por nuestro pueblo, el de la transformación iniciada por el presidente Andrés Manuel López Obrador".
