Let's look at the simple past.
We use the simple past to talk about actions in the past.
For example: I walked to work yesterday.
For most verbs we add -ed.
1. smile/smiled close/closed walk/walked
When a verb ends in -y, we drop the -y and add -ied.
2. carry/carried marry/married study/studied
With irregular verbs, the word changes completely.

"Vacation" game: A student selects a place which they have been to on vacation, but keeps it a secret. They tell the other students three things they did while they were there. Other students try to guess where they went. The winner gets to go next.

We use the past progressive to talk about an ongoing action in the past.
For the past progressive, we use:
was/were + -ing + the simple past
For example:
I was cooking when the phone rang.
We were playing baseball when it started to rain.

"The Freeze" game: Have two students close their eyes. The third student acts out the one of the following actions (write on whiteboard): Brushing teeth, drinking water, eating noodles, washing face, combing hair, putting on lipstick, putting on glasses, writing a letter. When the instructor says "freeze", the student must freeze and the other students open their eyes and try to guess what they were doing (using sentences in the past progressive). e.g. He was eating a sandwich., etc. Students get one point for each correct answer.
