LIBRARY ORIENTATION/LIBRARY INSTRUCTION PROGRAM
LIBRARY ORIENTATION/LIBRARY INSTRUCTION PROGRAM
The Library Instruction Program (LIP) of the Instructional Media Center offers a variety of activities for Paco Catholic School students in all levels. It aims to provide the basic knowledge and skills needed in acquiring rich information through the use of library resources and facilities. It also provides varied opportunities and meaningful learning experiences to students to enhance their reading skills, thus, making them conscious readers and critical thinkers. Also, the Library Instruction Program provides the faculty members a means to update their skills with the most current technology and information access tools. The Instructional Media Center Staff teaches information literacy skills to students through a completely integrated approach. Research projects at each year level and in each subject area afford students the opportunity for introduction and reinforcement of research skills. Students are introduced to the best resources in each subject area. They learn specific searching skills to make them efficient users of information, and yet give them time to practice and refine those skills as they complete tasks and projects for their classes. Skills that are covered include the following:
Using of the Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC), Searching in the Internet and website evaluation,
Researching process that includes determining research needs, narrowing topics, locating and using appropriate resources, note-taking strategies, and
Documenting of resources and ethical use of information is a key element emphasized through each assignment.
Moreover, the Library Instruction Program fosters collaboration between librarians and faculty to help students navigate the complex information environment and develop important research skills that will help them succeed. Also, the librarians provide a library and research-related instruction to support assignments and to enhance overall information literacy competencies. The different topics covered in instruction sessions include:
