Welcome to the class of 2023. You chose a study direction that will require you to balance your compassionate, caring heart with a deeply critical mind. Frowning at social injustices is not enough; you have to be passionate about wanting to change the structural inequalities that characterise our deeply divided society.
As a social work student, you will register with the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP) from your second year of study. As you get ready for registration as a first-year student, apply for a Police Clearance Certificate at your local South African Police Station, as well as clearance from the National Child Protection Register with the Department of Social Development. (Details of these can be found at http://www.asaswei.org.za/students). This is required by law, in order to do volunteer and internship work with children.
We look forward to getting to know you and journeying the next four years with you. Rest assured that we will guide you on every step of the way.
The Department of Social Development Professions is situated on the South Campus of the Nelson Mandela University and is located within the Embizweni Building.
The qualification is offered over at least four years of full-time study.
As from second level, social work candidates must register as student social workers at the South African Council for Social Service Professions before commencing with practical work.
Students are required to undertake a minimum of 600 hours of experiential learning as arranged by the Department at an approved organisation under supervision of a registered social worker during the course of the degree. This takes place incrementally from first year through to fourth year.
Social work is a practice-based profession that promotes social change, development, cohesion and the empowerment of people and communities. Social work practice involves the understanding of human development, behavior and the social, economic, and cultural institutions and interactions. Social work professionals work with families and institutions.
