Student Employment

Please talk to your faculty advisor

BEFORE filling out any forms.

SCOPE STUDENTS MAY NOT HIRE/EMPLOY A STUDENT WITHOUT PRIOR APPROVAL. IF THIS OCCURS, THE STUDENT WORKER WILL BE CONSIDERED A VOLUNTEER AND WILL NOT BE PAID. THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS.

Student employment is limited to those situations where there is a demonstrated need for an area of expertise that no one on the team can fill and when learning that skill will require time that would substantially delay or impact the progress of the project.

  • The following information (in an email) must be submitted to the faculty advisor, the Director of SCOPE and the SCOPE Program Manager:

    • Written justification that describes a demonstrated, essential need. There may be a shortage of labor on the team and the work will not be completed on time without this hire. The justification needs to address how this hire will impact the critical path of the project.

    • The team should be specific in describing the duties and responsibilities of the employee, the skills needed, the # of hours the person is expected to work, the name of a specific student you may have in mind (optional) and any other pertinent information.

  • One team member will serve as the contact person. All requests for student employees will require the approval of the faculty advisor and the Director of SCOPE.

  • Pay rates are set by the college.

Once the position is approved by the faculty advisor and the SCOPE Director, email the approvals to the Program Manager and fill out this online form.

Advertising: The Program Manager will work with HR to ask for the job to be posted. If you have a specific person in mind to hire, you will indicate this on the form. It would be helpful to let potential hires know that they will need to go to HR to fill out a voucher and paperwork after the form has been submitted.

Outside Contractors of Consultants: Use of outside contractors or consultants must be approved by the Director of SCOPE and the faculty advisor in advance and must be included in the approved team budget.
