~Tips to help Keep Kids Safe Online~
Children spending more time online may face a higher risk of exploitation. The U.S. Department of Justice offers tips to help keep them safe:
Talk About Online Safety β Set rules before they go online, teach them to recognize dangers, and keep communication open.
Monitor Internet Use β Check their profiles and posts, keep devices in shared spaces, and set time limits.
Review Apps & Sites β Before they download or use apps, check for risks like private messaging, video chats, and anonymity, which predators may exploit.
Use Privacy Settings β Adjust privacy controls and enable parental settings on apps, games, and devices.
Warn About Sharing Personal Info β Teach kids not to share personal details, photos, or videos with strangers or in public online spaces. Remind them that anything posted stays online forever.
Teach Boundaries β Explain body safety and how to say "no" to inappropriate requests both online and offline.
Watch for Warning Signs β Be aware of changes in their behavior, secretive internet use, mood swings, or signs of distress.
Encourage Reporting β Urge kids to tell a trusted adult if someone makes them uncomfortable or asks for inappropriate things. Utilize the Safer OH Tip Line.
Report Suspected Abuse β If you suspect online exploitation, call your school counselor or principal, call 911, contact the FBI at tips.fbi.gov, or report to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children at 1-800-843-5678 or report.cybertip.org, Use the Safer OH Tip line to report anonymously.Β
