Welcome to the University of King’s College Chapel!
The Chapel is always accessible to you, and you are always welcome in this space regardless of your religious affiliation or lack thereof. All of our activities are student-run, from worship and music-making to outreach in the city of Halifax.
We — Cohen Aiken, Kate Fleming, Jonah Folkman, and Lokwing Wong — are the Chapel Wardens. We are part of the student leadership team, which works closely with the Chaplain, Father Ingalls, and helps nurture connections to the whole campus and the wider city. Get in touch whenever and say hello if you see us around! Your University Chaplain is available to all students to encourage, advise, counsel, and offer support in your life at King’s. The Chaplain’s office is on the main floor of the Arts and Administration Building – stop by and meet Father Ingalls (and his corgi, Finnegan!) anytime.
Both the King’s Chapel Choir and the King’s Chorus make their home in the Chapel. Beautiful music combines with historic liturgy in the spirit of FYP’s exploration of the roots of so much we take for granted in the modern world. The Chapel Choir sings at services every Wednesday and Thursday at 5:00 p.m. and you will also hear them singing grace at Formal Meals. Compline — a late evening service — is sung on Mondays at 9:30 p.m. by a smaller group of singers, and the King’s Chorus rehearses weekly and sings one concert each term. New choir members are welcome in our choral groups at any time. For info on joining, see kingschapel.ca/music.
Hearing the chapel bells three times each day is part of the King’s experience. The bells, which usually ring at 8:00 a.m., noon, and 5:00 p.m., indicate that prayers are being offered in the Chapel. The Chapel holds student-run services every day of the week except Saturday, to which all are most welcome. For full details of our schedule, see https://www.kingschapel.ca/service-times or check the notice board outside the Chapel doors. For two hours each day (7:00-8:00 a.m. and 10:00-11:00 p.m.), the Chapel is reserved as a quiet space, available for individual meditation, solitude, and quiet reflection. No one will bother you. Hardly anyone will see you. There are also many other times throughout the day when the Chapel is empty, or almost so. In addition to regular services, the Chapel organizes hikes and volunteer opportunities and hosts open mikes, concerts, vigils, lectures, and community retreats — keep an eye out for posters and FYP announcements! The retreats are opportunities for students to gather in community outside of an urban environment and experience the natural beauty of Mi’kma’ki (“Nova Scotia”). Chapel retreats are centered around shared meals, discussion, prayer, and several addresses from a guest poet or scholar.
Welcome to King’s! We cannot wait to see you at the Chapel!
Best,
Cohen, Kate, Jonah, and Lokwing
