Road Safety

Accessible Streets

The Accessible Streets proposal from NZTA sounds like a totally urban focused change to footpaths and bike routes. But it's not! The areas of legislation being changed also affect horse riders - particularly the lack of paths or shared paths for horse riders. In fact, we become the ONLY road user group without any provision for safe road side paths!

The submission date was extended due to COVID lockdown and NZTA has received such a huge number of responses (on all the various subjects).

2017 Road Safety Petition

This petition was originally started when Karen Rutherford was severely injured, and her horse Curious George was killed in Dairy Flat, just north of Auckland. In late 2017, the Ride for Road Safety captured media attention, and now we have the hard work of getting practical changes made to the road rules, and the legislation.
