I took students to the Estuary to learn more about ecology. They learned how to catch and sex crabs, how to identify organisms, te reo words, about detritus, etc. Take a look at the field guide in the middle to learn more about this field trip.
Field guide I made by adapting the 'Avon-Heathcote Estuary-Ihutai Education Resource'. Has photos of the organisms students might see.
Students can use this guide to identify organisms. Laminate it.
You can tell it's a female because of its dome shaped abdomen.
All those little dots are snails.
We caught a few crabs and determined their sex and species. We then released them where we found them.
I am currently liaising with Orana Park to provide this opportunity to 20-30 of our students.
