Why Start My Own VIA Project?
Why Start My Own VIA Project?
Creating your own community service project gives you the opportunity to have greater control over what you want to work on and what you want to achieve. Community service projects are different from traditional community service work because they are usually focused on one event or one goal and have distinct endpoints. For example, starting a food pantry for residents to place access food to help with the needs of the local community living around you.
Initiating Your Own Project Shows:
Care: You care about your society and what is happening around you
Respect: You respect the needs of those around you including people, animals and the environment
Resilience: Organising such a project would also mean you may meet with multiple setbacks, you just need to be persistent and continue to find ways around these challenges.
Responsibility: Running a VIA Project all by yourself means organizations and individuals will be reliant on you, you cannot give up halfway and must be responsible for the needs of this community and also the project you are running!
How Do I Begin My Project?
Let's Illustrate The Steps Using An Example!
Step 1: There is an animal shelter that needs help in spreading the word about the adoption of their shelter animals.
Step 2: I am able to design posters to advocate for adoption.
Step 3: I have decided to create an Instagram account and run a social media campaign to advocate for adoption.
Step 4: I will develop a working plan for my campaign e.g. What will be in my Instagram posts? How will I create them? Who will see them?
Step 5: I will start recruiting like-minded people with video editing/creation skills.
Step 6: I will need to set a timeline e.g. Decide how long it would take to create the videos and run them on Instagram.
Step 7: I will carry out the social media campaign.
Step 8: I will then reflect on what worked, what did not work, and what could have been done better.
