The Purple Star School Award recognizes schools that show a major commitment to students and families connected to our nation’s military. A school will be honored with the Purple Star Award if it completes all the required activities, plus at least one optional activity explained in this module. Purple Star Schools will conduct the required and optional activities on an annual basis. All Nevada public, private, and charter schools are eligible to apply for the Purple Star School Award.
The Purple Star School Selection Committee, which was formed by the Nevada Department of Education and includes representatives of school districts, Site Liaison Officers, Veterans Affairs, and the Nevada National Guard, reviews applications and selects the Purple Star Schools.
Nevada's Purple Star Schools receive a special Purple Star recognition to display in their buildings, are recognized on the Nevada Department of Education web page and social media platforms, and are highlighted by the various military installations across the state.
Each school is required to name a Point of Contact who is required to complete this professional development training focused on military-connected families.
Additionally, we suggest schools designate a Purple Star Advocate in addition to the POC. The Purple Star Advocate is the staff member who will collaborate with the School Liaison Officer and Department of Education to resolve Compact related issues. This may be the POC, an administrator, counselor or other staff member familiar with, or willing to become familiar with, the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children. For middle and high schools, we recommend the Advocate be a counselor.
