On October 16th, 2023, I began my two-semester-internship program at Ana Muslim Sdn Bhd in Kuala Lumpur. I have gained invaluable insights and skills within the animation industry. Early on, we were given a comprehensive tour to familiarise ourselves with the studio's environment and daily routines. This allowed me to adapt swiftly and efficiently to the dynamic setting of the animation studio. Throughout the internship, we were entrusted with various assignments, from character and background design to modelling, rigging, animation, motion, and even TikTok content creation involving acting and product promotion. These diverse tasks not only improve my hard skills but also enhance my soft skills.
The company structured our work days with fixed hours from 8:45 am to 6:00 pm. This consistent routine created a productive and comfortable working environment by giving our learning and teamwork a strong foundation. Overall, my internship at Ana Muslim Sdn Bhd has been a rewarding experience that has provided me with a variety of real-world exposure and opportunities for professional development in the exciting world of animation.
During my internship at Ana Muslim Sdn Bhd, my first task was primarily on 3D animation. This process required an understanding of animation principles, such as rigging and motion, to bring life into characters and scenes. During my first to third week of internship, I was collaborating with other interns who were assigned in 3D. While working on them, the task given to me was to animate lip sync and walk cycle for each character. Through practical experience, I was able to refine my technical skills and get insight into the ever-changing field of 3D animation in the industry. Besides, after my 3D teams finished their internship, 3D animation needed to be held for a while until there's a lot of interns in 3D and I was assigned to animate game characters in cutout animation. Animating 2D game characters requires a particular technique, focusing on fluid actions, expressions, and actions within the confines of a two-dimensional world in order to create lively and interesting animations.
Apart from animation, I was also involved in drawing for game development. I was assigned to draw a few objects that were listed for the game aesthetic and narrative. In order to ensure that the visual aspects blended in smoothly with the overall game design, this project required a fusion of technical ability and creativity. My skill set also expanded as a result of my involvement in making promotional TikTok content. Creating engaging content for social media required a distinct storytelling technique that combined originality to grab readers' attention and successfully promote ideas or products. This broad range of work not only expanded my scope of abilities but also gave me a thorough grasp of all the many aspects of creating visual material in the multimedia and gaming industries.
For 3D, my first task during the time was animating lip sync for the character Ana Solehah. That was the first time I used 3D software after four years, and the software the company has been using is Blender, which is a software that I'm not familiar with since I used Maya before this. I was having a hard time getting used to Blender, but with the help of other interns in 3D, my work slowly goes more smoothly than usual. Later I was assigned to animate the walk cycle for Ida and Ibrahim and once everything was done, I was assigned to do model rigging and clothing for the model.
Problem
Didn't get use to 3D software
Struggling with 3D animation
Lip sync and mouth shapes
Solution
Spend time thorough tutorials and online courses designed especially for it and practice on a regular basis.
Seek guidance from YouTube since the company don't have 3D mentors.
Studying reference materials like movies or professionally animated films.
Ask supervisor or friends for feedback to help improve lip sync skills.
When it comes to the animation phase, I'm excited for the task itself. The animation style that the company chose is simple and easy to be animated. The software that they were using is Adobe Animate which I'm not particularly familiar with. But, once I've been using it for a day, I already get a grasp of the software itself and know how to use the basic tools. After becoming used to the software, the animation process is easy and the work goes more smoothly.
Problem
Lack of Consistent Artistic Style.
Different opinions and perspectives.
Solution
Establish a clear and consistent artistic style guide before starting the animation.
Make sure that the animation team communicates and aligns/ works together.
When it comes to post production. Other than the basics, I do not know a lot about editing. When I was asked to handle the editing, I immediately took the opportunity and began editing the video the best that I could give. I have been using after effects and premiere pro, but the company wants everything fast and recommends using Capcut to handle this task. The task went smoothly and I managed to finish it by dateline.
Problem
Lack of knowledge in advanced editing skills.
Solution
Asking seniors for advice and suggestions on editing.
Looking up answers via online.
