Description: Installation of standing seam metal roofing and removal of ridge tiles at a Contributing rated, one-story, single-family residential building.

HDLC Guidelines:

Section 5, Page 5 & 8 of the Guidelines for Roofing.

  • Install standing seam metal roofing and remove existing ridge tiles, when appropriate for building type and style.

Staff Recommendations:

1030 France Street is a typical single shotgun residential building with Victorian-era detailing. Constructed ca. 1885, the frame building is surmounted by a hipped roof covered with simulated/asbestos shingles. The roof retains its original English-V style ridge tiles. The proposed installation of a standing seam metal roof would require the removal of the existing decorative ridge tiles. Per the HDLC roofing guidelines, the removal of ridge tiles and installation of standing seam roofing can be reviewed and approved at the Staff level when the work is appropriate for the building type and style. Contextually and stylistically, Staff does not find the proposed metal installation to be in keeping with the building. Therefore, the proposal was not approved at the Staff level. The applicant is petitioning this decision to the HDLC NO Commission for review.
