Description: Review of Aeratis brand composite siding products for consideration of Staff-level approval.
ARC & Staff Recommendations:
The ARC recommended conceptual approval of the product for staff level approval, with the proviso that it is only approved where composite materials are approved by the Guidelines at the June 18, 2024 meeting. It should be noted, that there were some concerns with sustainability in the making of the product, as this is a PVC material. Staff supports the ARC recommendation and to clarify the proviso, Aeratis siding would be approvable at new constructions, additions, and at the sides and rear of historic buildings; Aeratis trim would be approvable at new constructions and additions only and is not approved for some items like column wrapping, per staff. This is consistent with other composite products such as Hardie.
04/16/24: The ARC deferred the application for additional review. The ARC agreed that:
It would be helpful for Staff to complete an informal test with the product samples submerged in water for a period of time so that the material characteristics and moisture resistance can be better evaluated.
The applicant should provide some example buildings where the proposed products have been installed, if possible, so that the ARC can better evaluate the installed appearance.
Additional information should be provided on the sustainability of the product, including its constituent materials, manufacturing process, and how it can be properly disposed of.
