Staff Recommendations:
823-25 Atlantic Ave is a Contributing rated, one-story, double shotgun building located in Algiers Point, constructed prior to 1896 according to Sanborn Maps. The applicant removed the ridge tiles during an unpermitted roof shingle replacement project.
The Guidelines states that ridge tiles and finials are visually important features, accentuating the changes in roof slopes, and the HDLC encourages their retention. HDLC allows for the reinstallation of existing ridge tiles during re-roofing. HDLC also allows for the installation of new Hecker ridge tiles.
Case History:
03/17/26: Homeowner applied for retention of the removal of ridge tiles.
03/13/26: HDLC staff removed the violation for replacement of roof shingles but stated that retention of the removal of ridge tiles requires Commission appeal.
02/09/26: Homeowner's Complaint Response Letter informed the HDLC that the re-roofing was performed because of extensive damage caused by Hurricane Ida (2021). At that time, the HDLC implemented an emergency order that provided a one-year suspension of the HDLC roof brand and colors requirement.
02/02/26: Homeowner cited with a Citation Letter for installation of new roof shingles and the removal of ridge tiles without a Certificate of Appropriateness and building permit.
