Inappropriate gates: Denial
Staff Recommendations:
This building was constructed sometime between 1880 –1890, according to the FEMA survey, and does not appear on the Sanborn map until 1896. The applicant is requesting retention of the installation of wooden doors as gates at the alleys.
Sometime between February 2025 and December 2025 the wooden doors were installed without permits. The HDLC guidelines state that fences, walls and gates must be historically consistent in style with the type and style of the main building. The proposed use of wooden doors as gates is not a historically consistent or appropriate fencing type for this property. Additionally, the HDLC requires staff review and approval of all details and materials for compliance with HDLC standards. These doors were installed without a Certificate of Appropriateness (CofA) and therefore were not reviewed for compliance prior to installation.
Based on these reasons, staff recommends denial of the request.
Case History:

01/08/26: An inspection was conducted, and the inspector noted the installation of wooden doors used as gates at the alleys.
