What is Meditation?
"Meditation is a practice where an individual uses a technique – such as mindfulness, or focusing the mind on a particular object, thought, or activity – to train attention and awareness, and achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm and stable state."
There are many ways to meditate! Have you ever heard someone say that vacuuming makes them feel calm? Or running? Coloring? or Cooking? Participating in activities that help clear your head can help you stay balanced, calm, and focused.
While there are many guided, intentional meditations available online and within apps, you can also achieve a state of relaxation in your own way as you move throughout your day.
It can be helpful to create a journal and list the activities that allow you to feel calm or happy. As you experience challenges and stress, that list can guide you back toward the things you know are helpful to you.
Keeping a journal, using an organizer, or creating any form of art can be relaxing and cathartic. Expressing yourself in this way allows you to literally and symbolically "get things out of your head". If you choose to share these works, they can also help open up dialogue about your thoughts and feelings.
Physical exercise releases endorphins and natural chemicals that allow you to feel happier. Aside from building strength, flexibility and endurance, exercise can be a very helpful form of meditation. Exercising outside can also provide a change of scenery that might help you see things from a new perspective :)
Listening to music can be an amazing way to boost your mood. Many apps allow you to create your own playlists which can be great when you want to access tunes that make you feel energized, comforted, happy, or relaxed. For some people, the absence of sound can also be very helpful- for example, you can remove yourself from environments with too much noise and sit outside or in a quieter place to feel more relaxed.
