Useful INFO for NMHS Seniors
Gap Year Programs (Coming Soon!)
Click on the yellow banner at the top of the page for the latest news and information from the NMHS School Counseling Department.
Seniors should be applying to college at least one week before application deadlines. For example, if you’re applying to a school with a 12/15 application deadline, that means you should apply by 12/8. Click on the NMHS Senior Timeline for a step-by-step guide to the college application process!
Seniors, outside letters of recommendation (from coaches, employers, volunteer organizations, etc.) must be requested through the Common App. The Common App will generate and send an email to the recommender with instructions for uploading his/her letter. At NMHS, faculty letters of recommendation are requested through Naviance ONLY. Do not put teacher letter of recommendation requests in the Common App.
Fee Waivers: Should applying to college present a financial hardship, you can apply for application fee waivers. This brochure explains the eligibility criteria for fee waivers for the SAT, which also applies to Common App Fee Waivers when applying to college. Since we do not know the financial situation of each of our students, NMHS uses a student’s Free & Reduced Lunch program eligibility to verify your qualification for fee waivers. Therefore, students requesting fee waivers must complete these two additional steps:
Register & qualify for the Free & Reduced Lunch program HERE
Fully complete the “Addendum A: Sharing Information with Other Programs” form HERE
For more information regarding the Free & Reduced Lunch Program, please call the Food & Nutrition Office at 860-354-3712 or email sullivansa@newmilfordps.org.
College Essay Assistance: Seniors, are you struggling with writing your college essay? Literacy volunteers are available to assist NMHS seniors with college essay writing. Email Literacy Volunteers on the Green at info@lvg-ct.org or call 860-355-0830 to set up an appointment to work with an expert volunteer.
College Application Tips for NMHS Seniors
Speak to your teachers in person, before you request a Letter of Recommendation in Naviance.
Do complete your resume in Naviance. Your Letter of Recommendation teachers will use it as a guide to your high school achievements (& you can use the resume later for scholarship applications!)
Do create an appropriate personal email address to use for your Common App.
Do clean up your social media accounts (you never know who might be looking!)
5. If you have taken the SAT or ACT, do send your scores to your colleges as soon as possible, up to 2 weeks before you apply.
6. Do keep an eye on those application deadlines!
7. Once you've submitted a college application, watch for an email from the college/university. Often you will be given access to an application portal where you can track the status of your application.
8. Make sure you add all of your schools to your FAFSA. Not doing so can delay your financial aid packet from any school you didn't include.
A note from Mrs. Shaffer:
Welcome SENIORS and underclassmen!
My name is Mrs. Shaffer, and I'm located in the Career Center (room 1101). I work closely with your counselors, and my role here at the high school is to assist you with your future-planning process. For some of you that means college - for others it means the Armed Forces, a trade/technical school, a gap year, a post-grad year, or the world of employment. I'll be the person sending your transcripts, letters of recommendations, and school data to the colleges when you request them. I also plan and schedule college visits and events (such as webinars, Instant Decision Week, info sessions, college/career fairs, field trips, etc.) We have lots of resources available, and I do speak with Admissions Reps and recruiters on a regular basis - so, feel free to email me, or pop in for a visit during your Study Hall!
I strongly recommend that you read my emails. That way you'll see the Career Center announcements, and be up to date on things such as scholarship opportunities, events, and more.
If you haven’t yet accessed Naviance, click here for instructions how to do so.
So, Class of 2023, I look forward to getting to know all of you, and assisting you in any way that I can to help achieve your goals - have a GREAT year!
Best, Mrs. Shaffer
