The NMHS Career Center has begun activating local and regional scholarships in Naviance, and will continue to add them throughout the Winter. While the vast majority of local and regional scholarships won't be available until late February, there are many state and national scholarships becoming available in the meantime. Use the resources below to find money for college and career training.
STEP 1: Learn where to find and how to apply for local & regional scholarships
There are many, many national scholarships available for both the college-bound student, as well as for students pursuing career education. Students are encouraged to search for outside scholarships on national scholarship sites (listed to the right). However, a national scholarship will likely have many more applicants since they are open to high school students across the United States.
Students can also use the national scholarship feature in Naviance - under the 'Colleges' tab, select 'Scholarships and Money', then select 'National Scholarship Search'. There are many other scholarship search tools, but be advised, you should never have to pay for a legitimate scholarship application or search tool.
Students can ask their parents/guardians to check with their employer(s) for any scholarships offered. Many companies and organizations offer scholarships to employee dependents. If your parent/guardian belongs to a union, inquire about the availability of scholarships from them, as well.
If you are a student who has a part-time job, check with your own employer to see if they offer any scholarships. For example, Starbucks, Dunkin’ Donuts, McDonald’s, and Chipotle are just a few employers that offer tuition reimbursement to their employees.
Many banks also offer scholarships. Check with your parent(s)/guardian(s) financial institutions to see if they offer any scholarships to their college-bound patrons and families.
If you or your parent(s)/guardian(s) belong to any organizations, community or professional, inquire whether they offer any scholarships. Another place to inquire about scholarships would be at your church, synagogue or mosque.
Perhaps you have a certain talent, skill, hobby, disability, medical condition, ethnicity, etc. - consider using a reputable scholarship search engine to find scholarships specific to any affiliations or unique qualities you may have. Let’s say for example that you’re an equestrian at an Arabian horse farm. The Arabian Horse Foundation offers a scholarship. Perhaps you are Latino. The Latino Scholarship Fund offers scholarships (along with several other organizations) for students of this ethnic background. There’s even a scholarship for left-handed people! Think outside the box.
