Meet Dr Charlotte Rothwell, a Senior Research Associate at Newcastle University and also holds a number of roles within NIHR infrastructure. As a methodologist for the NIHR RSS Specialist Centre for Public Health, Charlotte is part of a team of methodologists and specialises in qualitative research.
Qualitative research is a type of research methodology that focuses on exploring and understanding people’s beliefs, attitudes, behaviours, and experiences through the collection and analysis of non-numerical data. Qualitative research tries to answer some of the why questions and is usually conducted using focus groups or interviews, asking questions to create understanding. So, trying to understand why something is happening. You may send a survey out that gets a yes or no response and in qualitative research we want to know the reason behind the responses, so yes or no and then why.
I’ve had enquiries from Public Health Practitioners who have had an initial idea and helped them decide on which funding calls they could go for, or they have gone through the first round of a submission and have got to phase two and needed to work on feedback so come to me to help fill the gaps and refine definitions. I have also commented and offered advice and suggestions on applications prior to submission. Ahead of my first meetings with researchers, after they have submitted their enquiry, we ask for an outline of the initial idea on one page to ensure we offer the best support, advice and guidance when we meet.
I’ve supported both researcher led ideas, and a commissioned call for research related to workforce health. The researcher led query was for a cycling intervention and the workforce one was for support with a Medical Research Council grant around health screening.
