About us

Commissioned on 1 October 2023 for 5 years, NIHR RSS Specialist Centre for Public Health is one national centre, jointly hosted by Newcastle University and Partners and University of Southampton and Partners. 

An investment of £30M was made to for the Specialist Centre for Public Health, £22M to Newcastle University and Partners and £8M to University of Southampton to lead on public health research settings outside of the NHS. In September 2025, the Specialist Centre for Public Health delivered by Newcastle University and Partners launched a 2-year pilot programme, funded by the Department of Health and Social Care, to strengthen research delivery support for public health research outside the NHS.  

The award represents a significant investment in public health research from NIHR.
