About us

Commissioned on 1 October 2023 for 5 years, NIHR RSS Specialist Centre for Public Health is one national centre, jointly hosted by Newcastle University and Partners and University of Southampton and Partners. 

An investment of £30M was made to for the Specialist Centre for Public Health, £22M to Newcastle University and Partners and £8M to University of Southampton and Partners to lead on public health research settings outside of the NHS. In September 2025, the Specialist Centre for Public Health delivered by Newcastle University and Partners launched a 2-year pilot programme, funded by the Department of Health and Social Care, to strengthen research delivery support for public health research outside the NHS.  

The award represents a significant investment in public health research from NIHR.
