We recognise that local authorities invest a lot of time when applying for funding opportunities, these frequently asked questions and the application guidance will provide support and guidance to help you.
Please contact us if you have any questions: nihr.rss.publichealth@newcastle.ac.uk
To apply you should use the application form.
No, we will only award funding for one LARP per local authority (and also allow joint applications, see below).
The local authority, or wider local system, is expected to match fund and provide significant ‘in kind’ support. If you are unable to match fund, you must contact the SCPH to discuss your application before you submit it.
No, the local authority will prepare a job description (JD) and undertake recruitment. This JD must be reviewed by the SCPH before recruitment commences. You must include the shared responsibilities and may also wish to incorporate the additional suggested responsibilities for your stage of research readiness.
Shared responsibilities:
actively promote, support and contribute to the activity of the SCPH
contribute to the sharing of best practice across local authorities as part of the LARP network
link with Public Health Engagement Leads (PHELs)
undertake regular reporting to the SCPH (Newcastle University and partners) to support the evaluation of the LARP roles and demonstrate their impact on research capacity and capability in local authorities
The grading of the post should be determined by the local authority’s own procedures and you should consider this in your funding request. SCPH can provide JDs from other local authorities for successful applicants.
Yes, two local authorities can apply for LARP funding, but this should only be applied for by one local authority who will be the lead on the application. Details of how to explain this on the application form are available in the application guidance on question one. While you may seek help to match fund the post from an ICB or NHS trust they are not co-applicants.
Yes, but they must work a minimum of 0.6FTE. For details see question 12 in the application guidance.
Yes, if the existing role is currently aligned to the LARP objectives or can easily pivot. Or if the role is going to be used for a secondment. For details see question 14 in the application guidance.
Our ambition is to provide the LARP funding opportunity to many local authorities over the next four years. This is only possible by funding only those local authorities that have not been awarded LARP funding previously.
Our Grassroots awards will launch in 2025, you will be eligible to apply for this and further details will be shared on our website and in our newsletter.
All shortlisted applications are scored against seven selection criteria, and by two panellists against a standardised process. This is the selection criteria rubric the panel use.
