After completing the Poker Table, one oversight that was revealed was the fact that the table could not be transported to and from with the tailgate closed. The wheel wells that protrude into the bed prevent the table from sliding in enough for the tailgate to close, so I devised a plan to raise the table above the wheel wells while also creating in-bed storage.
The building process again began with preparation and measuring, followed by designing a 3D model in SketchUp, as seen to the left.
The base was created with a sheet of 1/2in plywood, framed by 2x6s. (swipe between pictures)
The drawer boxes are cut, lined with carpet and assembled. (swipe between pictures)
A 3/4 in sheet closes the top of the box, angled aluminum is mounted at the leading edge and the entire box is painted with truck bed liner. (swipe between pictures)
Drawer fronts were created, pull handles mounted, and the drawers were completed with T-handle locks to keep it all secure. (swipe between pictures)
The completed drawers above show how the tailgate carries the weight of the drawers when extended with the entire box creating a platform for wide objects to sit on and clear the wheel wells.
