One evening when eating diner at my grandparent's house, they noted that a certain cabinet they have in their kitchen was too low for them to reach in their old age, and wanted a solution that would still allow them to access items that fell to the back of cabinet without the need to crawl on the floor. I devised a solution.
As can be seen to the left, their old solution didn't work so well. The plastic tub didn't quite fit right, and much space was wasted. I took some measurements home and began work. (swipe between pictures)
I scavenged some wood from a old dresser that I found on the side of the road, and processed it into a nice board that could be used as the base of the drawer. (swipe between pictures)
The drawer front, rear, and side pieces were cut, assembled and inset into rabbets along the border of the base. (swipe between pictures)
The box was sanded and finished, followed by a few coats of paint to match their cabinets and drawer slides to let the whole box extend out. (swipe between pictures)
The careful measurements I took paid off when it was time to install; the box went in without a hitch and worked great. (swipe between pictures)
The organizational difference was major, and the back-saving ability of the pull-out box made the project very worth it. My grandparents still rave about it every time I see them.
