Active Player- You are an Active Player if (1) you are obligated to perform football-playing services under a contract with an NFL Club, or (2) for purposes of qualifying for total and permanent disability benefits, you are no longer obligated to perform football-playing services under a contract with an NFL Club, but you are within the period beginning when your last contract expired or you were terminated for any reason, and ending on the later of the July 15 following the beginning of the period or the first day of pre-season training camp.
Credited Season- Defined in section 1.11 of the Bert Bell/Pete Rozelle NFL Player Retirement Plan.
Co-occurring Disorder- People who have substance use disorders as well as mental health disorders are diagnosed as having co-occurring disorders, or dual disorders. This is also sometimes called a dual diagnosis.
Holistic- characterized by the treatment of the whole person, taking into account mental and social factors, rather than just the physical symptoms of a disease.
Household Family Member(s)- This would include a spouse/partner, dependents, and any family members living under your roof.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)- The typical IOP program offers group and individual services of 10–12 hours a week. IOP allows the individual to be able to participate in their daily affairs, such as work, and then participate in treatment at an appropriate facility in the morning or at the end of the day. Typically, IOP programs encourage active participation in 12-step programs in addition to the IOP participation. IOP is often associated with treating substance abuse, mental health, and/or cooccurring disorders.
Legend- Any player that signed an NFL contract.
Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT)- The combination of behavioral therapy and medications to treat substance use disorders.
Mental Health Crisis- A situation in which an individual is exhibiting extreme emotional disturbance or behavioral distress, considering harm to self or others, disoriented or out of touch with reality, has a compromised ability to function, or is otherwise agitated and unable to be calmed.
Mental Health Non-Crisis- A non-life threatening situation that does not contain hallmarks of a mental health crisis situation. Usually this includes the absence of suicidal or homicidal thoughts, is not delirious nor disoriented, and is realistic in conversation. Typically, these situations would include someone who is grieving over a recent loss, may experience fluctuations in anxiety, or sudden dips in depressive symptoms.
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)- A Partial Hospitalization Program is an organized mental health treatment program that generally runs for several hours each day for three to five days per week. Clients participate in the scheduled treatment sessions throughout the day while still living at home. Programs are a step down from 24 hour care in and inpatient treatment setting or as a preventative measure to avoid hospitalization. PHP is often associated with treating substance abuse, mental health, and/or cooccurring disorders.
Player- You are a Player if you are or were employed under a contract by an NFL Club to play football in the league.
Sober Living Homes- Facilities used by people recovering from substance abuse that serve as an interim environment between rehab and mainstream society.
Substantial Disablement- A ‘permanent’ disability that satisfies one of several criteria points set by the Plan.
Vested Inactive Player- A Vested Player who is NOT an Active Player.
