NFL Player Disability Plan:
Line of Duty Disability (LOD)
Credited Seasons Requirement: Not an Active Player & no specific credited seasons requirement.
Application deadline: Former Players with 0-4 Credited Seasons must apply within 48 months after the end of their last contract with an NFL Club as a Player. Former Players with 5+ Credited seasons have equal to their number of Credited Seasons to apply (e.g., 6 Credited Seasons = 6 years of eligibility).
Description: A Player may be entitled to an LOD benefit if the Disability Initial Claims Committee or the Retirement Board determines that, as a player, you have (1) incurred a substantial disablement arising out of NFL football activities, and (2) timely applied for this benefit. Neurocognitive Disability (NC Benefit)
Credited Seasons Requirement: Vested Players with 4+ Credited Seasons pre-1993, Vested Players with 3+ Credited Seasons post-1993, and Non-Vested Players within defined eligibility period below.
Application deadline: Non-Vested Players have 84 months after the end of their last contract with an NFL Club as a Player. Vested Former Players can apply until they begin collecting pension benefits.
Description: A Player may be entitled to an NC Benefit if at least one Plan neutral physician selected finds that the Player has a mild or moderate neurocognitive impairment. There are additional qualifications for the NC Benefit. Total and Permanent Disability (T&P)
Credited Seasons Requirement: Active Player or Vested Inactive Player (additional requirements exist, please contact the Plan Office to determine eligibility).
Description: A Player may be entitled to T&P if the Disability Initial Claims Committee or the Retirement Board determines that (1) you are substantially prevented from or substantially unable to engage in any occupation or employment for remuneration or profit, and (2) your condition is permanent. There are additional qualification criteria for T&P. 88 Plan
Credited Seasons Requirement: Players with 4+ Credited Seasons pre-1993, and Players with 3+ Credited Seasons post-1993.
Description: A Player may be entitled to receive 88 Plan benefits if the 88 Committee or the 88 Board determines that (1) you are a vested player, and (2) your condition meets the 88 Plan’s definition of Dementia, ALS, or Parkinson’s Disease. The Plan reimburses or pays for medical and custodial expenses related to the aforementioned diagnoses. There are additional qualification criteria for the 88 Plan.
