With backgrounds from almost everywhere, volunteers are either Midwestern citizens who have answered the call to arms, or wasters who believe in the ideals of the Midwestern Union. While they are given ad-hoc training by the New Model Army unit they are assigned to, volunteers tend to have differing levels of training. Former veterans to fresh faces from the wasteland-whatever their story was before, they are now a proud Volunteer in the 1st Sunrise Volunteers.
The core of the New Model Army, almost every single member was an Infantryman at the start of their service. As an attempt to rid the ways of the old Coalition, Infantrymen are properly trained at a training camp or fort before being deployed to a combat zone. With their diverse backgrounds and reasons for enlisting, a good mix of Coalition veterans who have fought in past conflicts and freshly trained recruits who are eager to fight for the Union fill this rank.
The first official position of leadership in the New Model Army, Lance-Corporals are Infantrymen who have proven themselves worthy in the eyes of their units command. They tend to take up menial tasks, such as leading patrols or acting as secondary role overseers in exchange for a minor pay increase. It is not uncommon for Infantrymen to approach them with issues first over officers, as to settle the matter discretely.
As of now the most senior position an enlisted man may acquire, Corporals are seasoned veterans of the New Model Army. They are entrusted with delicate operations by their commanding officers, along with performing the same duties as an officer if none are present. While their place in the hierarchy is clear on paper, it has been noted that Infantrymen may be more prone to follow their orders over those of Junior Officers. However, due to them still being an enlisted rank, they sit below Junior Officers on the hierarchy.
