PRIMARY ROLES IN THE 17TH ROYAL ENGINEERS
With the New Model Army standardizing the militias of the Midwest into one coherent army, a standardized set of roles was made. However the 17th Royal Engineers role in the New Model Army is that of being a defensive engineering unit, as such their roles have been modified to accommodate their different mission parameters.
The standard infantry role of the 17th Royal Engineers, Guardsmen are the jack of all trades. They serve mostly in defensive roles involving the protection of military installations, the engineers of the 17th, high value targets either be an object or a person during assignments. Guardsmen are equipped roughly the same as standard NMA Troopers in terms of armament, with the main difference being in armor and equipment. While the New Model Army's new approach calls for carrying a light kit, the 17th is mostly exempt from this due the equipment they need to carry out their engineering duties.
Sappers make the 17th Royal Engineers what they are. They specialize in anything and everything involved around fortifications, breaching, explosives, and other ordinance; making them a highly important role within the New Model Army. While most Sappers prefer the comfort of security that accompanies their armor, many have opted to take the lightweight approach of the New Model Army, making them more nimble on the battlefield. The standard armaments are similar to that of a NMA Shocktrooper, carrying SMGs, shotguns, and carbines to cut down on weight given they have to also haul around their heavier kits.
While the New Model Army deploys Sharpshooters alongside their standard infantry for combat support, Watchmen possess a slightly different purpose. Watchmen are gifted with long-range weapons, and as such they have been equipped with higher-power rifles compared to their peers. The main task of Watchmen is to scout and observe for exterior threats, and to neutralize those threats before they become a problem. While the kit of a Watchman is almost identical to that of the NMA's Sharpshooters, they often favor weapons that pack a punch over ones with more mobility.
Masters of building defenses and fortifying locations, Shieldwrights are the literal shields of the 17th. Shieldwrights act as the architects of the New Model Army, constructing buildings and maintaining military installments, while also playing a crucial role in combat. When fighting, Shieldwrights main goals are to help build up cover for the NMA, be they advancing or holding a position. While most prefer to stay in the back and prepare defensive lines, a handful of Shieldwrights make use of actual ballistic shields where they become the cover instead. Due to the weight of these shields, those equipped with them can only use a sidearm.
Fire supremacy will always be needed no matter the situation, and that's the job of the Sentries. Sentries are Guardsman who forgo mobility for firepower where they utilize heavy weapons to halt any advance on their location, putting them in a powerful but also vulnerable position. Sentries make use of a wide variety of machine guns due to their less mobile nature, and are primarily used to operate mounted turrets. While other roles like Shieldwrights and Sappers are more armored, Sentries forgo the extra protection to allow them to maximize the efficiency of their weapons, relying on their already fortified positions for protection.
