Next Meeting - Top Spec Feed Talk 7.30pm 13th October 2025 at Rochdale Golf Club
On Saturday 3rd August, 4 Riders were riding up Furbarn Road towards the barrier, when a group of E-Bikers came down the Road at speed. Although the riders were wearing hi-viz, the Bikers did not spot them until the last minute and slammed on their brakes causing them to skid on the stones. The horses spooked and at least one rider was unseated. Luckily, thanks to the quick thinking of local residents, the horses were prevented from running onto Edenfield Road. During the incident one of the riders was trampled by 3 of the scared horses and suffered severe injuries. She is currently in hospital very lucky to have survived.
This is a very clear warning why all users of Public Rights of Way and the Highways should be responsible and aware of the natural flight instinct that horses have. If a horse, which can weigh in excess of half a tonne, comes into contact with any vehicle, the damage incurred would be very severe, not to mention the damage the animal would do to itself. Can all drivers and bikers please remember the highway code advice to pass horses slowly (10mph) and at a distance of 2m so that accidents like this can be prevented.
We wish the rider a speedy and successful recover, but we understand that it will be a long road for her to get back up to full health.
