This summer, 2024, I moved into a new apartment for a software engineering internship, and I brought along a new TV that I bought. Where am I gonna put the TV though? Woodworking to the rescue! With some free time between the end of the semester and start of my internship, and dusted off my tools and got to work on a simple but good looking TV stand.
The apartment is relatively small and we wanted a TV without taking too much of the limited floorspace, so I modeled the apartment and planned the TV stand before I spent any money on lumber to make sure it would even work for our space.
Once designed, I cut everything out using just the table saw and miter saw. The cuts were all pretty straightforward, with the only notable feature being the mitered boards used to surround the plywood top!
After plenty of sanding and three solid coats of lacquer, the TV stand is complete! It fits perfectly in the space I intended. A big takeaway, however, is that applying lacquer with a brush absolutely sucks. I may look into learning how to use a HVLP spray gun to apply both paint and clear coats more easily. My main concern would be how to do that safely. Anyhow, this new TV stand has got me in the mood for a movie...anyone got popcorn?
