This particular project was done as a gift for a good friend's 18th birthday. I collaborated with another friend to come up with a good idea for a gift, and we both decided to commemorate the birthday boy's good memories of the video game, "Overwatch". In particular, he liked playing the character "Genji", who was a cyborg ninja that used a particular katana. As such, my friend and I purchased a replica katana from the video game, but how would the katana be displayed? Now, it was my turn to get the creative juices flowing and make a katana holder!
I began by browsing online to see how traditional Japanese katana stands are done. With that done, I transferred sketches over to the online CAD software, Onshape, where I was able to create a 3D model of what I wanted the stand to look like.
After printing out templates from my 3D model, I used my bandsaw to cutout all the necessary pieces. I cut slightly away from the cutline so that I could sneak up on a snug fit between the sides and the center brace.
When all was said and done, the assembly went together smoothly, and the gift was delivered safe and sound. I wish my friend and I had reordered our delivery of the gift, for we came up with this whole elaborate speech, complete with royal music and everything. Alas, the moment will live on in my memory, and the birthday boy himself was very happy with the gift!
