My grandfather was an avid hunter during his younger years, and one of his favorite rifles was a lever action rifle. With my brand new band saw ready for action and Christmas right around the corner, I wanted to surprise my grandfather with a recreation of his favorite lever action rifle. Complete with an internal cocking mechnaism and working rubber band shots, I was eager to start.
Unfortunately, my brand new bandsaw was defective and I had to replace it with a new one from the manufacturer. All the staff were away on Christmas break and I was getting frustrated. Production ended up being halted until June, but when my band saw was ready, you couldn't stop me if you tried.
After two days of intense cutting, shaping and sanding, I had a completed model. It all went by in such a blur because I was having so much fun, so I forgot to take pictures of my production process. However, there is not much besides the layering process to create the shape and the internal shooting mechanism. As shown in the image, the firing mechanism consists of various wooden pieces that can pivot on wooden dowels as a system of rubber bands keep everything moving.
It all worked out in the end as I managed to get everything packed up and shipped to my grandparents in Florida. I included the gun itself, plenty of rubber band ammunition, wooden blocks as targets, and even an instruction manual to complete the experience! The manual includes the entire loading sequence, which you can watch below. I covered everything in bubble wrap, stuffed it in a box, and it was ready to go!
I am very happy with the final product, but it is a shame that I only had time to make one. It is so cool that I want one for myself! I hope to continue exploring the use of internal firing mechanism made of layered plywood, and I am glad that my grandparents enjoyed the gift!
