My computer desk has served me well for many years. As a matter of fact, I have used my same desk for nearly ten years! However, it has always been a bit lonely. With minimal table surface and no drawers for storage, it could have used a buddy right by its side. That's where I come in! I decided that enough was enough, and I wanted to add a filing cabinet next to my desk. It had to be the exact same height, have plenty of storage and blend right in. Time to get to work!
Building the cabinet came together relatively easily as I used a straight edge with my circular saw to make precise cuts.Â
After making all my cuts, I began using glue and screws and put the frame together. Hidden pocket screws can in real handy for this process.
With the frame completed, I got to work on the drawers. These took a bit more work because they each needed a rabbit cut on my router in order for the bottom and back to fit in nicely.
With the drawers done, I focused on getting the spacing right as I installed the drawer slides. This would be critical for the smooth operation of the drawers!
Finally, I installed the drawers and applied a couple coats of black paint. I added some "fancy" drawer pulls, and I called it done! I later added some trim to the drawers to cover up the plywood edges.
I am very happy with how it all came together, and it worked perfectly when setting up the rest of my workspace. I have plenty of space for books and paper work, but it clears up nicely for a clean and organized look.
Although my workshop, or rather my bedroom, is not really set up with the right tools to make fine furniture, projects like these are plenty rewarding for me. I look forward to doing more woodworking projects in the future!
