Suelen Barg is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Materials, School of Natural Sciences at The University of Manchester. She leads the Nano-3D research group since 2015 when she joined the UoM. Her research interests are related to the design and fabrication of novel nanostructured materials combining structural and functional properties to support key technologies (transportation, energy and biomedicine) in a more sustainable world.
Her activities within the school span research, teaching and leadership: She is the deputy Theme Lead for Nano and Functional Materials; Nano Materials Programme and Subject Lead; and PGT Director. She also acts as the materials representative for the Graphene Nownano CDT and as a committee member for the British Carbon Group (BCG) representing “novel carbon materials”.
Prior to her appointment in Manchester she was an Intra-European Marie Curie Fellow following a postdoc at Imperial College London in the Centre for Advanced Structural Ceramics (CASC). She received a PhD in Process Engineering from the University of Bremen, Germany and a degree in Materials Engineering from the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil.
Suelen is also a mother of three children, balancing her scientific career with caring responsibilities. She loves to disseminate science and aims to encourage other women to develop a career in STEM.
