Hello Grade 6 Students!

In 2018, Canadian musician Jeremy Dutcher won the Polaris Music Prize. This prize is awarded annually to the best full-length Canadian album based on artistic merit, regardless of genre, sales, or record label. The award was established in 2006, with a $20,000 cash prize. Today, the prize is $50,000.

When I first listened to Jeremy Dutcher, I was mesmerized by the beauty of the music and the depth of his emotion. Jeremy is a young, classically trained musician who has an Indigenous background. Jeremy, with the assistance of his elders, resurrected his language and created a full-length album that celebrates the language and stories of his ancestors.

This week, I have included his prize winning interview with CBC radio and one of his performances.

I would love to know how you respond to his music.

Cheers,

Miss D.
