Here is a video of what I have been working on. I've been sorting out some story stuff too, but I don't really want to put that up here, because I feel someone might actually read this when I do put the game out and find out about it without playing the game. So I'm going to be trying to keep things not too big, and more so about the things I am learning.
This video is what I watched to get the movement sorted. The way this guy explains the video is awesome, I really love listening to him. Much better than when I was dealing with my teacher in class. I actually GET what he talks about. I wanted First Person this time instead of 3rd person, so I got this. And instead of using a rigid body like I did in my Samurai Game I'm using the character controller here.
I was trying to create a script for the doors to open and close. And the first one I had created didn't work properly. It was only working on about every 3rd click of the E button, which was annoying. When discussing on Discord it came up that the interact should actually be on the player. I tried to muck around with something for this myself but wasn't getting anywhere. Then I stumbled on this page and downloaded the scripts he had. They are just what I needed. You put an interact script on the player, you put scripts on your objects to interact with, and link in there what objects are going to have scripts run. So, on the light switches I have an InteractionReceiver script, with the lights themselves as the reference objects. Then the lights have a script that on activate trigger will disable the light, and on deactivate trigger will enable the light. Felt so cool to get done.
I thought to myself "Well, why not, why can't I have a Realtime mirror?" And here I am, watching a video on how to make a real time mirror. And it worked perfectly. I needed to make a few tweaks to get the final eye height right, but aside from that it's awesome. The character can be seen in the mirror, and when you walk up to it it is about the right height. Wasn't a very long process, and since I only have the one mirror I don't think it'll be too much of a resource drag. Might add another mirror into another part of the story for when the player gets up to there.
Lastly, I just wanted everything to be greyscale. And I found this little video which showed me rather simply how to do that. Can't complain. It's not 100% what I want, as I do want some things to have full colour when they are there, but that's a hurdle I'll jump when I get to that part.
Review:
I feel behind and in front. I have a heap of things sorted that will help me in the future, but I also only have an apartment. But that's all good. I'm still learning, and I have learnt quite a few good tricks that I'll be able to put into practice in the rest of my course too.
What's Next?
I'm going to flesh more of the world out. Turning the greyscale off first. I'm going to build his apartment block, and Kate's apartment. Then I'm going to have a look into a few sounds, and maybe slow the player down a bit. After that I'll hopefully have the City pack and can build the street down to his work place.
Enjoy the Lofi, I know I've been loving it!
