The first thing I've done with this is get some ideas down.
I took the 3 songs linked on the main page and wrote specific bits of them that I want to use, that directly link to the image of the game I have in my head.
I also looked into what I wanted to make:
A narrative driven story, no combat, just a story that's happening
I want it to have a looping theme, where the initial scene is repeated but as you delve further into it things change
One key to making this feel like a 'game' to me is giving it multiple endings, triggered by doing certain things. From just a quick thought on it I can see at least 4 endings I want it to have.
I don't want to to be an overly big game, and I want getting all the endings to be something that people can do in a single sitting if they wish. But I'd still like for each 'run' through of the game to be 15 minutes long at least.
Taking stock of my resources I already have Town and Office packs from Synty, so I'll be able to make use of them for characters, the apartment, and the office building I want to have.
I don't have City, and I think that will be rather important in building the areas between the apartment and office, the bits where the decisions are made. It's not expensive and I'll be able to get it next pay I think.
One big thing I need to learn in Unity, that will make or break what I am doing, is some animations. Not like animating the character to move, but like making some cutscenes. Things that the player clicks a thing and the character does the thing, but you actually see him doing it. I feel this will have more impact than just saying he does it. I want to player to be feeling this story through visual narrative as well as having bits of story told to them.
As such I'm looking into 2 things.
How to make cutscenes in Unity, like how to set up my scene so it actually makes a cutscene and isn't just some weird thing I've done.
Making the models move the way I want if I don't have an animation for them. Like making them move their arms even if I don't have a grab animation. Or positioning them to be sitting down, rather than T-posing everywhere.
Next Step?
There's a few things I need to do next.
Come up with the story line - outlining how everything is going to be going
Start building my scenes - I can build the apartment and office already, I have those assets
Work on the player moving around the scene - this should be simple stuff, getting the player to navigate the scene the way I want them too
So that's where I am at currently.
