Firstly, I decided to change the player's animations as I decided the ones I had preciously did not quite fit what I was looking for when I imagined the character's movement. I like the ones the character currently uses. Though there is an issue with the transition between the double jump and idle animations that I can't quite seemed to figure out. Yet. The updated animations are present in the video at the end of this DevLog.
As I previously mentioned in DevLog 1, I decided to go with the Synty Studio's Kingdom pack as I am not quite familiar with 3D modelling yet. Though the plan to become familiar with it lays in the the near future as part of the game development course I am doing. Until then I am happy to use the assets I purchased.
The first step in building my level was creating an environment which had a ground to walk on and some props like trees, grass, flowers, crates and some items at the black smith. Then I added the following building:
house
wizard's home
tavern
blacksmith
castle
For now these building serve as background. Though in further levels the player may be able to go into certain buildings to interact with NPC's inside the building. The wizard will teach the player magic, blacksmith will give the player weapons, etc... These features will be decided on later in the development of the game, depending on how far I want to push this game.
During the Unity Asset store's massive sale I managed to get the AllSky asset in a flash sale. It includes more than 220 skyboxes. They look pretty awesome!
Player's & Wizard's Home
The player's home is the first building you come across in the level. I am not sure if it will serve another purpose further along the track.
The wizard's home is where the player learns their magic attack in the future. If I add that feature.
Tavern
The tavern will offer the player food to replenish their health further along the track. I was originally thinking a drink but in reality a drink won't improve your health. Right?
Blacksmith
The player will be sent to the blacksmith to equip themselves with a weapon to be able to defend themselves as they come across enemies in further levels.
Castle
This scenery is purely decorative and for a bit of fun I added the wizard who had one too many of his favourite drinks.
The kids having fun at the castle while their parents are having a conversation.
Castle
The game starts with the player heading to the King to hear what is expected of them during their given task. The player will return here once their task is completed.
Hopefully in the next step of development I will add an interactable dialogue system enabling the King and player to have conversation where the player will be able to opt for a variety of responses to the King's story.
It's time to show the final outcome of my first attempt in building a level. Though frustrating as it was at times, especially with the assets' mesh colliders (sigh), I am happy with the result. As I progress in my course and in addition gain more experience by making games I am positive that I will keep improving in my journey to become an awesome game developer.
