The United Nations Special Summit on Global Sports Governance (UNSSG) is a platform for member states, governing bodies and alike to collaborate and shape the evolving landscape of international sports.With sports holding deep cultural and emotional significance for billions across the globe, the call for ethical, transparent, and unified global sports governance has never been more urgent. At THSVKMUN’25, the UNSSG committee convenes to deliberate on the Unify League proposal which is widely considered to be the revival of the European Super League.

The ESL proposal was faced with widespread backlash as it was exclusive to only 20 clubs, with 15 of them being permanent members of the league. It raised many questions about the ethics, representation, equity and the functioning of international sports.

Some of the most powerful international sports bodies like FIFA and UEFA also got involved, with UEFA threatening to exclude clubs from the UEFA Champions League that would partake in such an event that makes people doubt the very existence of sports meritocracy. It created a “rich get richer” scenario where not many clubs could fight for their position in the league. The ESL overall reflected a shift towards power centralization, and profits over ethics.
