“Discussing the global fashion industry, with special emphasis on contributions from first world countries.”
The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) acts as the main intergovernmental body in fostering and safeguarding the human rights of individuals at the global stage. Delegates of the UNHRC deal with a wide spectrum of conflicts, human rights violations, and protection provisions. Delegates at THSVKMUN’25 will achieve this by deliberating to form a resolution regarding the ethical and human rights concerns across the global fashion industry.
The demand for affordable and easily made clothing through an ever-growing ‘fast fashion’ monopoly has led to people working in hazardous factories—often facing unsafe environments—along with unregulated working hours and unlivable wages.. Over 50% of the world’s child labour is directly linked to the fashion industry. Lives are being traded every day to keep up with the trends, profits prioritised over basic living conditions.
The worst part? People in low to medium-income countries tend to face the brunt of this exploitation since Western companies categorically seek them out to work in these industries. The pitfalls of the fashion industry do not end here. The damage extends further, leaking into our soils and rivers, causing irreversible, widespread environmental degradation and pollution. This ends up posing an additional threat to human livelihood.
The UNHRC at THSVK MUN’25 will be a forum to confront the grave ills of the fashion industry, like the curtailing of human rights and the promotion of an extensive culture of disposability and waste. We look forward to seeing you embark on a powerful journey of resistance and rectification against predatory systems of power and oppression through inculcating the cruciality of human rights in the global political framework.
