There will be one midterm during the semester. The condition for obtaining a signature is to achieve at least 40% on the midterm (i.e., obtaining at least 24 points out of 60).
For students of the System Optimization (BMEVISZMA10) course, there will also be two homework assignments one on linear and integer programming, and one on scheduling algorithms. Submitting and accepting the large homework assignments is required to obtain the offered grade available for the course (i.e., not for obtaining the signature and the oral exam). For students of the Combinatorial Optimization (BMEVISZM029) course, submitting the large homework assignments is not mandatory, and they can receive an offered grade without it.
There are two ways to obtain an exam grade for the course: with an offered grade or with an oral exam.
An offered grade can be obtained by those who achieve at least 55%, i.e. 33 points, on the midterm exam and - if they are a student of the System Optimization (BMEVISZMA10) course - submit the major homework assignments which are graded as accepted. For those who complete these, we offer an exam grade based on their results on the midterm exam: a pass (2) grade for 33-41 points, a satisfactory (3) grade of 42-50 points, and a good (4) grade of 51-60 points. (Since the offered grade depends on the midterm result, it cannot be obtained in an exam only course.)
An oral exam can be taken by those who have a signature in the subject and either did not obtain an offered grade, or obtained one but would like to improve it. Oral exams, of course, take place during the exam period. If a student registers for an oral exam in Neptun (more precisely: is on the list of applicants on the day of the exam), then he/she loses the offered grade, it is no longer considered valid - even if he/she does not appear for the oral exam in the end. For those who take an oral exam, the result of the midterm exam is taken into account with a weight of 40%, and the performance shown in the oral exam is taken into account with a weight of 60%.
In accordance with the TVSz, previously obtained signatures from the subject are valid. Students who have a valid signature from a previous semester may attempt to write the midterm exam again in order to improve their previous midterm exam results. The following conditions apply in this case:
A student with a valid signature from a previous semester may retry to obtain the offered grade by rewriting the midterm exam and submitting the major homework assignments. If they fail to obtain the offered grade, their signature will of course remain valid, but they will have to take an oral exam to obtain the exam grade.
If you manage to meet the conditions for signature again, the result obtained in this way will count towards your oral exam grade (even if it is worse).
If you fail to meet the conditions required for signature again, the signature will not be lost, but only the minimum score required to obtain the signature will be counted towards your exam score.
If a student with a valid signature appears at least once in a midterm during the current semester, it is considered that the student has made an attempt to re-acquire the signature and the offered grade and is therefore subject to the above conditions. Otherwise, the performance in the most recent semester in which the student attempted to fulfill the conditions of the signature will be taken into account.
The midterm exam can be made up at the repeat midterm exam or at a fee-based second repeat midterm exam written during the make-up week. Students with a previous successful midterm exam can also attempt both the repeats, but only on the condition that in this case the new score will be valid, even if it is worse than the original. There is one exception to this: if the student has achieved the 40% score required for the signature, but the new score of the midterm exam is below 40%, then the student will receive the signature, but his/her midterm exam result will be considered as 40%. Please note: as a result of the above, if a student achieves a result of at least 55% in a midterm exam and then achieves a result of below 55% in a new repeat midterm exam, then he/she will lose the offered grade. If someone appears in the repeat or second repeat (and takes the problem sheet), it is considered that the person has made an attempt to write the paper (and thus the above conditions apply to him).
In the oral exam, each candidate draws one question from the list of theorems for the current semester. In order to obtain a sufficient grade in the exam, it is not necessary to know the proofs of the theorems, but it is necessary to know and understand all the learned concepts, theorems and algorithms. (The fact that the candidate understands the material also includes being able to illustrate the concepts, theorems and algorithms with examples if necessary, and being able to understand the simplest relationships - those that follow immediately from the material and do not require a more complex proof.) A candidate who understands the deeper relationships inherent in the material and has learned and understood the proofs (or at least part of them) can expect an average or better grade .
In addition to the normal midterm, you can also obtain an offered grade at the repeat midterm and at the paid second repeat midterm, under the same conditions as those written about the midterm.
You do not need register for the repeat midterm. You must register for the paid second repeat midterm in Neptun - but only for those who did not obtain a signature at the previous midterms (or in the previous semester). Those who have already obtained a signature and are only participating in the paid second repeat midterm session for the purpose of improvement or in order to obtain the offered grade, registering in Neptun is not necessary (in fact, it is not advisable, because it costs money). However, if someone wishes to obtain a signature at the paid second repeat midterm (and possibly also an offered grade), they must register in Neptun; if they fail to do so, we will not be able to enter their signature obtained on this occasion in Neptun. (Therefore, we do not have the option of allowing a student who does not yet have a signature and who has failed to register in Neptun to participate in the fee-based retake.)
Attention: Those who register for the fee-based retake in Neptun should be careful not to confuse this opportunity with the fake-exam opportunity announced (which must be taken by those who wish to validate their offered grade and take the final exam during this exam period).
Important: Those who have obtained an offered grade in the subject and wish to validate it must register in Neptun for the fake-exam opportunity opened specifically for this purpose (this will be an exam from 8am to 8:05am on two separate days). Those who take the final exam for the master's course in the spring semester of 2025 and therefore need to register their offered grade sooner should register for the exam opportunity designated earlier in June, specially created for this purpose; We ask that only those who are actually taking their final exams this semester apply for the earlier date in June and the rest for the later date in June.
The offered grades in both cases (i.e. for students taking their final exams this semester and for others) will be entered into Neptun on the day these two exams are scheduled - namely, as mentioned above, for those students who meet all of the following three conditions:
they obtained the offered grade (at any midterm, or in the case of students of the System Optimization course, by completing the homework assignments) and did not lose it at a later midterm;
They applied for the exam opportunity opened for this purpose at Neptun;
It has not happened in any oral exam (this semester) that they were on the list of applicants on the exam day.
If someone applies for one of the special exam opportunities advertised for entering the offered grade and does not meet any of the three conditions above, they will receive a "no show" entry in Neptun for this exam opportunity. Please note: if someone has met the conditions for the offered grade, but does not apply for either of the two special exam opportunities, we cannot enter their offered grade!
The homework assignments require the practical application of the relevant, learned material and, according to our plans, do not represent a serious burden: they can be completed with a few hours of work at most. In the case of both homework assignments, the lectures will only reach the classes directly supporting the solution of the assignments at the very end of the semester (in the last one or two weeks of study). However, this does not cause a problem, because there is still plenty of time to submit the assignments after this (see the submission deadline below). Despite this, there is no obstacle to someone working on the large homework assignments even earlier, if they independently prepare themselves with the knowledge necessary to solve them. An auxiliary material is available for both large homework assignments, which contains elaborated sample assignments (and in the case of the LP+IP material, it also describes the expectations related to solving the assignment and provides advice on the solution): Students of the System Optimization course can access the assignments on the faculty's Moodle interface (from 28th April)
The answers to the questions asked in the assignments must also be entered in Moodle, then the system automatically checks the correct solution of the assignments and provides feedback on the acceptance of the appropriate assignment. If a solution is not perfect and therefore not accepted by Moodle, it can be re-submitted as many times as desired. The two homework assignments do not need to be submitted at the same time, they can be worked on at different times.
The deadline for submitting assignments is midnight the day before the day of entering the offered grade. (More precisely, this obviously means that the correct solution accepted by Moodle must be submitted by this time.) Please note: since this date differs from the others for the final exams this semester, the submission deadline set in Moodle (which is the very end of the exam period) is only formal and does not reflect reality. Of course, we cannot enter the offered grade if the assignments are not submitted and accepted by the deadline.
Midterm: April 28, 18-20
Repeat midterm: May 12, 18-20
Paid second repeat midterm: June 2, ???
Please read the information regarding midterms carefully.
Attention! We would like to draw your attention to the following regarding the technical implementation of midterms.
No aids or devices may be used in the midterms.
Each midterm consists of 5 problems. Solution to each problem is worth 12 points, the minimum score required for signing is 24. The working time is 90 minutes.
Please ensure that everyone arrives with a sufficient number of blank sheets of paper stapled together when writing the midterm. Each sheet must contain (preferably in the upper right corner) the name of the writer and the Neptun code, as well as the number of the problem solved on that sheet. This information should be written on the sheets before the start of the midterm, but apart from that, all sheets must be blank.
Before starting the midterm, please take your seats in strict accordance with the seating order announced by the instructors in charge in the room or written on the board. Ignoring this or not following it exactly may result in a situation where two students writing the same paper are too close to each other; if this is due to ignoring the seating order, the paper of the student who violated it will automatically be invalid.
Please ensure to bring pens, stapled blank sheets of paper (with name, neptun code as indicated above), and some form of photo identification. In addition, everyone may have something to eat and drink, but nothing else. All other personal belongings (such as bags, coats, folders, written or printed notes, electronic devices, etc.) must be placed at the edge of the room, on hangers, or (especially in the case of items of greater value) on or next to the teacher's desk. We therefore strongly request that both the empty chairs between the students and the seats in the unseated rows remain completely empty during the entire time the paper is being written. (If there is a guarded cloakroom in the building, it is worth placing personal belongings not required for writing the paper there.)
When writing the midterm, any communication (whether oral or written) between the students is strictly prohibited. Any problems or requests (even the simplest ones, such as a request for a pen or a handkerchief) must be reported to the instructors supervising the room. Violation of this may result in the invalidation of the paper of the student initiating it, regardless of the content of the communication.
During the midterm, no one is allowed to have a mobile phone (even turned off), a smartwatch, or any other electronic device; please ensure that anyone who requires this has a (non-smart) watch for the duration of the exam.
After starting the paper writing process, you cannot leave the room for the first 30 minutes, and after this time, students who arrive late will no longer be able to write the exam.
Once the instructors in charge of the room announce that the working time has ended, nothing more may be written on the paper. (This means that even the word or sentence you are currently writing must be left unfinished.) If someone violates this, they risk having their paper invalid without any further consideration.
After the end of the working hours, deliver your exam to one of the supervising lecturers in the room as soon as possible - and in full compliance with the order of submission requested by the lecturers. Late papers are automatically invalid - regardless of whether the delay is directly due to the student writing the exam or not.
