Leadership & Team Building

Being editor-in-chief has taught me the importance of not only fixing grammatical errors in my staff's writing, but also helping them find their own journalistic style of writing and maintain that artistry throughout all of their work. This year as a staff, we have worked on strengthening our leads and writing compelling captions to accompany photos. I have learned a lot about responsibility and accountability through this role. Managing deadlines, assigning articles, and handling typical newsroom conflict have become second nature to me.

My Staff

At The Charger, our staff has a work hard play hard mentality. We celebrate birthdays and holidays often in the newsroom and celebrate the distribution day of our print edition each month by getting lunch together. As editor-in-chief, I foster a positive environment in which my staff will never be scared to ask a question or speak up. Writing requires a lot of vulnerability and I want my staff to feel comfortable sharing their writing with the world.

Maestro

Each month our staff maestros together to brainstorm story ideas for our upcoming issue. We split into our respective beats (news, features, entertainment, opinions, sports) and comes up with ideas then come together as a class and share. From there, we decide which stories will go in our print paper and which stories will go on our online edition.
