Theory question: What is the Rule of Thirds? Why is it important?

Marking criteria:
Every photo must be different
Photos are properly exposed (if too dark or too light, pop them into Lightroom and fix!)
Photos do not have too much wasted head room
Subjects are intentionally placed at different intersecting points, demonstrating an awareness and understanding of the rule of thirds
Students must demonstrate creativity in choosing/setting up the scene/setting to photograph (make the photos exciting!)
All photos must be in focus with the exception for an intentional blur)
