WHAT ARE WE DOING? (Objective) : We will create an abstract drawing using shadows of everyday objects.
VOCABULARY:
Silhouette - the dark shape and outline of someone or something visible against a lighter background. The shape will show the outline of the subject. A shadow is a type of silhouette.
Abstract Art - Art that is not not so real, or art created from shapes and colors with out making a realistic picture at all.
Distortion - when a real object/person looks bent out of shape, stretched, or the parts of the whole do not seem to fit together properly.
MATERIALS:
Crayons, colored markers
White paper
Pencil
4 -5 objects from around your house that you think will make interesting shadow shapes
NOTE: You will need to do this outside on a sunny day, or in a room that has a lot of sunlight.
THINK AND DO:
What will happen if you overlap shapes of real objects? Will you still be able to recognize what they are? Will they change into something else? Will they make new shapes?
Place the paper on the floor/ground. Place an object on the edge of the white paper, see what shadow shape it makes.
Move the object around until you see the shape you like best. The image might look distorted depending on the angle of the sun in the sky. The distortion is OK to use!
TRACE the edge of the shadow of the object. That is the silhouette.
Repeat this tracing with ALL your objects. You might need to move the paper around so the shadow falls on the paper. Try to have at least TWO objects OVERLAP.
Make sure all four sides of your paper have a shape touching it.
Try to fill the SPACE of the paper in a way that looks interesting to you.
Look at the drawing turn it around. Think about which way looks best.
CHOOSE 5 colors and color in all the separated shapes.
DO NOT LEAVE WHITE SPACE.
COLOR IT ALL IN!
BONUS: Create contrast by using WARM COLORS to color the objects and COOL COLORS to color the negative space (the space around the objects) OR vice versa.
WHEN YOU ARE DONE: LOOK AT YOUR DRAWING. Can you still recognize the original shapes? Point to new shapes your created by coloring the overlapped shapes. What made your drawing look ABSTRACT? Turn it around again and decide which way you like it. Write your "artist" name on the BOTTOM!
