WHAT ARE WE DOING? (Objective) : We will create a mandala through drawing lines, shapes and symbols.
VOCABULARY:
Mandala - Mandala designs are symmetrical with a center radiating inward or outward, creating a kind of wholeness. Similar patterns can be found in nature including flowers, or the spiral on snail/shells . Mandalas were first created as spiritual and ritual symbols in Asian cultures 1500 years ago.
Radial Symmetry - is a type of balance in which the parts of an object or picture are regularly arranged and radiate from a central point. It appears both in natural and in human-made objects.
MATERIALS: You will need:
Crayons, colored markers (optional colored chalk if you want to do this outside!)
White paper, colored paper, or brown paper from grocery bag, for background
Scissors
THINK AND DO:
Mandalas are meant to be something personal and meaningful. As you think about drawing your mandala, think about shapes or images or symbols that have meaning to you. Make a brainstorm sheet of them. It could be suns, hearts, wheels, diamonds, etc. Mandalas can also help you to relax, because you are making a design that is the same, or balanced, all the way around. What music can you listen to that will be calm? When you make the mandala, try putting on that music to listen to while you work.
WHEN YOU ARE DONE: What symbols did you use in your Mandala if any? What was most challenging about making your Mandala? What was the most enjoyable part of making your Mandala?
