Strips and Strings, Mary Lee Bendolph, 2003
WHAT ARE WE DOING? (Objective) - We will create a collage of cut strips and triangles based on the idea of a Crazy Quilt.
VOCABULARY:
Quilt- Patchwork designed patterns made with fabric, with multiple patches sewn together. The finished quilt is used for practical purposes as a blanket.
Crazy Quilt- this is a quilt design where there is no regular pattern. The designer uses irregular shapes and creates irregular patterns. Crazy Quilts are extremely creative and free-flowing by nature.
Collage - a piece of art made by gluing different materials (shapes, magazine pictures, cloth) on to another paper.
Gee's Bend Quilters - A tradition of making crazy quilt's developed over generations in a small, remote African American community in Gee's Bend, Alabama. These women quilters are known for creating stunning designs that reflect a modern abstract art aesthetic.
MATERIALS:
White paper
Textured Rubbings on paper see (Texture Collage)
White or Colored paper for background of collage
Colored crayons
Scissors and glue or glue stick
WHEN YOU ARE DONE: Which shapes did you use more, triangles or strips? Did you plan out your collage or figure it out as you went? What was the most enjoyable part of this project? What was the most challenging?
