In a wild turn of events, I was invited to chaperone a trip of Detroit students camping out in Yosemite National Park. Having never camped in my life, I was hesitant and was mostly persuaded by peer pressure (thanks to y’all voting yes in that poll back in June) and it was honestly one of the most wonderful and healing experiences of my life.
Detroit Outdoors & The Sierra Club chose Yosemite in particular so our kiddos could meet Shelton Johnson, renowned Park Ranger, author and CT Alum 💚🤍. The goal of this trip was to introduced Detroit youth to the National Parks as a means of breaking down stereotypes and barriers that Black and Brown folks “don’t” camp. Our history proves otherwise. As a nod to the Buffalo Soldiers who were the first Park Rangers to serve and protect Yosemite, Shelton Johnson said, “We deserve to be here. These parks are our inheritance.”
Granted, I was very much spoiled for my first camping trip. We had a private chef, a Mt. Everest Expedition leader, a journalist, two photographers and a videographer with us so we were well taken care of.
Major highlights were hiking down the 4.6 mile trail from Glacier Point, mountain climbing at Puppy Dome in Tuolumne Meadows, and hiking the Mist Trail to check out Vernal & Nevada Falls. My only regret is not sleeping under the stars.
The National Parks really were America’s Best Idea!
