Though any teacher would enjoy their summer off, I have kept myself busy working at a local recreation center as a day-camp counselor from summer of 2016-2018. My campers range from ages 5-11 and it has been an incredibly fulfilling, wonderful, and sometimes messy experience with children who I don't often work with.
Working with elementary aged students requires me to change the way I provide instruction because an 8 year old does not have the same vocabulary as my 16 and 17 year old students. And while I don't often have as heavy conversations with my campers as I do with my students, I am amazed at their perceptions and understandings of the world. There are many adjustments I have to make when working with this age group, but overall, it is an amazing, fun, and still considerably messy experience!
