Through word of mouth, a former colleague sent me a link to this opportunity as she thought I would really enjoy it! This fellowship gave me the opportunity to align my political engagement with my teaching passion!
Once a month, I attended a virtual session with fellows all across the state where we learned about Michigan's political cycle, educational policies and potential legislation that needs to be pushed onto our public servants.
I was a part of the SEAD Working Group which focused on Social Emotional Learning and Mental Health in our k-12 schools. Fittingly enough, there was a Senate Bill that has been sitting with the House Education Committee since September 2021. With 2022 being an election year, we feared that our politicians were purposely stalling on this legislation so the bill would simply die before a vote.
I was given the opportunity to write an op-ed about the necessity of mental health legislation. As a writer, I tend to say a little too much but apparently that's a good thing for an op-ed because that meant there was more to workshop!

I can now proudly say that I've been featured on a Podcast episode! One of the MTLC Directors invited me to join him for this episode to discuss teacher compensation, and needed legislation for Michigan schools!
Are we really surprised how much I enjoyed it? Really though, any opportunity to talk about my thoughts on politics and education, I'm happy to ramble!

While we had some productive conversations with the House Education Committee members, we continued to run into the same wall that because we weren't their immediate constituents, that they did not prioritize this bill because they weren't "sold" that mental health in MI schools was important.
While our group is pretty representative of the state, we did not have anyone in the district's of the two chairs on that committee. So we needed social media to help us out! Sharing this flyer and script on the MICORE Facebook Group was a great help so we could reach those politicians and force them to listen to their own constituents.
Despite both Rep. Hornberger and Rep. Paquette being former educators, prioritizing students' wellness just didn't feel needed to them. How odd.
Ironically enough, this bill had a unanimous vote in the Senate, and yet the House Committee couldn't even agree to have a hearing on it. Equally odd.
